This morning I made my way to a local nursing home for our monthly communion service. After breakfast with some wonderful ladies I headed to the church to pick up resources and the guitar. That is when things started to go awry. Found the guitar but the song book and the service book were missing in action. Back to the house to continue the search. Service book recovered but alas the song book seemed to have vanished. Now that isn’t really bad except I don’t play by ear. I need the notes. So I returned to the office once more to see what I could scrounge up. Finally, with all that I needed, it was time for the service and I didn’t feel like going.
I did go of course and am so glad that I did. These folks are such a gift and I am so privileged to have them in my life. They come to worship and look forward to me being there; they put up with my mediocre playing and singing; they always ask how things are for me and at the end of the service there are hugs all around. Sometimes I think that this time does far more for me than it does for them. I always leave feeling renewed and refreshed and I know that in this space, in this moment, I have been blessed by the presence of the holy.
The Divine Song is Sung Through Us
During the service we talked about each of us being a unique work of art created in Divine image and that the Divine song is sung through us. I looked around the room, I saw beauty and heard the divine melody.
There is the woman who collects pins and each pin tells a story, She loves to share those stories and I love to hear them.
Then there is the woman who always reminds me that she holds me in prayer and her smile is amazing.
There is the man who comes in last minute but always engages in the service. He is up to date on what is happening in the world and always offers prayers for those who are hurting.
One man remembers that he plays the piano and this morning he talked about his dad giving him a steel guitar. He played the divine song.
After the service I began to think about my faith family and the many ways that I have heard the song sung. Every day new notes are added and the anthem I hear is breath taking. Our scared story reminds us that we are called to sing this song and in doing so bring light and life and love into the world.
Psalm 149 “Let us give praise to God in the dance: let us make Divine melody with instruments of brass and corded instruments of music.”
Isaiah 42 “Sing a new song, let praise rise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who dwell there.”
Psalm 100 “Make a joyful noise all the earth. Enter into these gates with thanksgiving and into these courts with praise”
My prayer is that you will know the amazing and unique work of art you are; that you will never be afraid to sing the song inside you waiting to be let loose and that you will hear the Divine melody.
Blessings
Valerie
