A Wilderness Time

This has been very much a wilderness time for us. Perhaps we could learn something from the ancestors. May we have eyes to see amidst the change that we can grow and change and be.

Exodus

By Valerie Peyton Kingsbury

From slavery into freedom
our people crossed the sea
They wandered in the wilderness
learning new ways to be

Miriam led them in a dance
and sang for them a song
But soon the lack of food and drink
made travelling days seem long

Beneath the rock came water
and on the ground was grain
to feed their bodies and their souls
and bring them strength again

They learned that the creation
would take care and provide
all they would need to sustain life
The Spirit’s flame would guide

With a sense of renewed hope
they found who they could be
and from their journey we can learn
to grow and change and see.

I’ve been having many conversations lately about this time of the pandemic. People are feeling drained, filled with a sense of uneasiness, tired of having to find new ways to be in community and so much more.

I could not help but think that this has been very much a wilderness time for us and perhaps we could learn something from the ancestors. Things are not as they always were. How we connect and the “normal” is not so normal anymore. But the same holds true for us as it did for the ancestors – the creation still provides for us and our nourishment can be found, sometimes in unexpected places. Despite all that is happening and will be happening for a while, the spirit’s flame still guides us. May we have eyes to see amidst the change that we can grow and change and be.
