I woke this morning to the sound of rain and thought “That is quite fitting”. It seems most important times for me are blessed by rain – my wedding, the beginning of vacations, etc. So the fact that today is raining highlights that this is a great day as I return to church and settle back into what I love! It is also really good for this province that has been without rain for so long!
Water For Our Souls
With the rain falling to replenish the earth it is no great wonder that, as I sit here, my thoughts are of water and those things that are like water for our souls. Our story is rich with imagery of water and wells and the quenching of thirst – spiritually and physically.
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and let anyone who believes in me drink. As the scripture says “ out of the believers heart shall flow rivers of living water” ( John 7:38-39)
“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I give will never be thirsty again. The water I give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life” (John 4: 13-14)
“The words of my mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a gushing stream” (Proverbs 18:4)
“This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah; and when it enters the sea, the sea of stagnant waters, the water will become fresh.
Wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live” ( Ezekiel 47: 8-9a)
“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God through the middle of the street” (Revelation 22: 1)
Beauty of the Rain
Then there are those images that come to mind for me of rain and water that bring laughter to my being:
- A child splashing in the in the puddles in joyful abandon
- Families playing on the lakeshore and jumping off the end of a wharf
- Water balloon fights
- The ice bucket challenge
Water, life giving; life sustaining, something that we take for granted and often abuse. I invite you to take a moment to revel in the wonder and beauty of the rain this day. Step outside and allow it to soak you and give thanks for its rejuvenating power and may you be blessed!!
Blessings
Valerie
