We come by our obsession with rules, policies and procedures honestly. While rules codes of conduct are necessary we sometimes go too far when, actually, keeping it simple makes far more sense. So today I share The 10 Commandments – Newfoundland Style
There have been many things running through my mind lately in light of where we are as earth’s children and conversations that I have participated in recently about rules, regulations, policies and procedures. One of the projects that I have embarked upon is a retelling of the Biblical Story through a progressive lens. I have completed the book of Genesis and am near the end of Exodus. During my time away these past two weeks I read and retold the story of the People of Israel as they camped at the base of Mount Sinai. During this time Moses received the 10 commandments.
Our obsession with rules, policies and procedures
Now, what I learned as I read this section of scripture is that, while we most often read those 10 commandments and leave it there, there is a whole other section that goes into detail about should and should nots. The supplementary manual, one could say. Then I realized that our obsession with rules, policies and procedures that have to be explained to death goes back to the beginning and we come by it honestly.
The KISS Theory Makes Sense
Don’t get me wrong, I certainly understand the need for codes of behavior, rules that help us live together in harmony and with respect for one another. But I have always thought that sometimes we take those too far, going into far too much detail and restrict our behaviours in such a way that we are stifled and unable to respond to situations as they arise with care and compassion. The KISS theory (Keep It Simple Stupid) is one that has always made more sense to me.
