The Woman Who Anointed Jesus

We have traveled through holy week and tomorrow we will come again to Golgotha and experience the darkness of this event. One of the stories that has always spoken to me, that took place in the final week of Jesus’ live, is the story of the woman who anointed Jesus. Her actions came from a place of deep love and great wisdom. Her heart told her that she needed to do this for Jesus and she did what she could preparing him for the unknown future that lay ahead.

In 2000 I wrote a piece called “Anointed”. It was a reflection on Jesus’ anointing and on an anointing service that took place during holy week in the congregation I served at the time.

Anointed

by valerie Peyton Kingsbury

In preparation for coming days

signaling his chosenness
offering strength and healing
anointing with oil
she came….

On that day so long ago

in love and devotion
pouring oil on his head
she came
to consecrate and claim.

One quiet day

signaling their chosenness
seeking strength and healing
to be anointed
they came….

Moving separately, yet as one

responding to a call
in love and devotion
they came
to be consecrated and claimed.

As he was blessed

so too were they
in preparation for coming days.

As we approach again the story that defines us in our faith journey, may you know your chosenness and feel divine blessing, as you too are consecrated and claimed for coming days.

Blessings
Valerie
