Treasure Hunt - Week 5 water

Treasure Hunt – Week 5

Our treasure hunt this morning takes us looking for water. It could be a pool of water, a glass of water etc., whatever comes in mind for you. Where is God/divine/spirit in this? What is the water saying to you?

Water is a necessity for our physical living, without it we would die. Spiritually, water holds great significance in our sacred story and speaks to us of many things – cleansing, hope, promise, freedom, creation, possibility, welcome, renewal. Through the waters of creation all life came to be. Our people moved through the water of the Sea of Reeds as they journeyed from slavery into freedom. In the wilderness, water came from the rock to sustain life and empower our people as they wandered. Jesus was baptized in the river Jordon; he offered living water to the woman of Samaria and on the night he was betrayed he took a basin of water to wash his disciples feet.

When I thought about this week’s pool of water I immediately saw, in my mind’s eye, the baptismal font and the words we use at the pouring of the water came to mind.

Treasure Hunt - Week 5 water

For me, as a minister, the privilege of celebrating the sacrament of baptism is a powerful experience. Every time I pour the water something in me stirs and I know in that moment that I am connected with something far greater than myself. I feel divine presence coursing through my veins and my own spirit is nurtured and renewed. When I pour the water on the head of the one being baptized my spirit sings and I think of all the possibilities that lie before them as they begin their journey of faith. The water also reminds me of my own baptismal covenant where I was claimed as Jesus’ own forever.

The words of the hymn “ All who are thirsty” runs through my mind as I write this and , for me, it calls me to a place of comfort, renewal and nourishment.

“All who are thirsty, all who are weak, come to the fountain.
Dip your heart in the stream of life.
Let the pain and the sorrow be washed away
in the waves of deep mercy as deep cries out to deep.
We sing, Come Lord Jesus Come”

My prayer for each of you is that you will find your place where the water of life runs through you offering what you need to live and love.

Blessings
Valerie

  1. A GOOD AFTERNOON VALERIE,
WHEN I AM IN THE OCEAN SWIMMING I ROLL OVER ON TO
MY BACK…AND LOOK UP TO THE BLUE SKYIES AND SEE
CLOUDS AND SEA GULLS AND NICE WARM SUN…I CLOSE
MY EYES FOR A MOMENT AND LISTEN TO THE WAVES ROLLING
IN AND I THANK GOD FOR THIS PARADICE.,AND PRAY IT WILL
ALWAYS BE A SAFE CLEAN OCEAN.
