My prayer is that we may be empowered to get rid of those things that are weighing us down, preventing us from embracing what Divine is weaving in our midst
A Strange Process
The theme running through a huge part of my life these last few weeks has been gutting and cleaning. I have always thought that we carry a lot of material stuff that weighs us down but it has been highlighted for me this last while as I have companioned some through the process of getting homes ready for sale.
It is a strange process, really. Each item carries with it memories and stories and so the attachment is real, yet there is so much “stuff” that the weight of it all brings with it great anxiety and a sense of imprisonment. The very things that we thought were important simply serve to bind us and keep us immobile. Burdened in such a way we are unable to live life to the fullest, we are not free to explore and become, and we miss the opportunities before us to experience wonder and joy.
“Once you need less, you will have more” (from the Mahatma Ghandi Canadian Foundation for World Peace)
“Materialism is the only form of distraction from true bliss” (Douglas Horton)
“We have a largely materialistic lifestyle, characterized by a materialistic culture. However, this only provides us with temporary sensory satisfaction, whereas long-term satisfaction is based not on the senses but on the mind” ( The Dalai Lama)
Cleaning up a Cluttered Life
There is something liberating about getting rid of the junk that takes up space and clutters life to such a degree that you cannot see or appreciate anything. The same is true for our spiritual journey. I believe that there is something to be said for taking the time to clean out our minds and spirits so that there is room for peace and truth to enter.
In just two weeks we will be entering the season of Advent. This is a time to stop and take stock. To prepare ourselves for the rebirth of the light of the world in us.
My prayer is that through this season we might be empowered to get rid of those things that are weighing us down, preventing us from embracing what Divine is weaving in our midst.
Blessings
Valerie
So true, we carry to much and have to let go, not being able to get rid of memories, is the hardest.
Always will be.
