What were they thinking

Early Monday morning, the sun is just up over the horizon, and all is still. The river is as smooth as glass and there is a sense of peace on the land. I poured my cup of coffee and was sitting on the back deck just soaking up the beauty of the moment when I heard some splashing and saw ripples on the water.

I walked quietly to the riverbank to investigate and what I saw was breath taking. A family of six otters were playing on Big Rock, diving into the water and coming back up again. What a way to start the day!

Once again I am transformed by the wonder of creation and filled with gratitude, knowing that I am truly blessed.

What were they thinking or feeling

Back on the deck I begin to wonder about this family –

  • Where do they live? In the hanger just up the beach or under the wharf perhaps?
  • How do they feel about the two-legged creatures that share their space? Are they as fascinated with us as we are with them?
  • What would they say to us, if they could communicate their thoughts?

Although there is no way to know for sure what they are thinking or feeling, I like to imagine that they too want only to live in peace and co-exist with the other of earths creatures just as it was in the beginning. I am taken back to the story found in Genesis and can feel the breath of Spirit blowing across the deep to bring all life into being.

At the Dawn of Time

I leave you with part of the retelling of that story from “The Elder Legends”, by Valerie Peyton Kingsbury

“At the dawn of time the earth was without form and was void. An energy swept across the great expanse of the universe and the creative force began to work. Light and dark, sun and moon, skies and seas, mountains, and valleys, all began to take shape. From the soil of creation emerged the four-legged, two legged and winged ones, those that live in the water and those that crawl on the land. Each strand of creation, intricately woven into a mosaic of great beauty and wonder.

In the days when all life came to be the creatures of the world lived in harmony. They could understand each other, and they shared the resources that the earth produced. They grew and changed and found their way in the world. The two legged, the four legged, the winged ones, those that crawled on the land and swam in the ocean all had male and female members. And it was good.”

Blessings
Valerie
